Labasa family grieving after alleged stabbing claims man’s life

A family is mourning the tragic loss of a 55-year-old man who was allegedly stabbed in Labasa over the weekend.

Korowiri resident Prem Chand was allegedly stabbed near Subrail Park on Sunday morning after going to deliver a sound system to a kirtan programme on Saturday night.

Speaking to fijivillage News, his wife Lila Devi said she received a call from her brother-in-law, saying that her husband had called her at around 2am asking for help, claiming he was stranded somewhere.

Lila says they made their way to the hospital, where her husband had been taken by Police following the incident.

She claims that despite her husband complaining of severe stomach pain and vomiting blood multiple times, medical staff told them that his condition was not critical.

The grieving wife says she is now left to care for their young son, who is in Year 3, on her own.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and a suspect remains in custody.

It is alleged the victim had offered the suspect a lift, and after both got off in town, an argument broke out during which the suspect allegedly stabbed him several times, causing serious injuries.

Police say investigations into the matter are continuing.
