Real Madrid opened their La Liga campaign with a 2-1 win over Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium.

Jude Bellingham gave Madrid an early lead before Álex Calatrava equalised for Espanyol in the first half.

Espanyol grew into the game and looked set to hold Madrid to a draw, but 21-year-old substitute Carlos Espí scored the winner in the 90th minute, just 10 minutes after coming off the bench to make his Real Madrid debut.

Six players made their Real Madrid debuts in the match.

The match also marked José Mourinho’s first competitive game since returning to Real Madrid as coach after 13 years.

During his previous spell from 2010 to 2013, Mourinho guided Real Madrid to the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.

Meanwhile, in other results, Sevilla beat Athletic Club 3-1, while Valencia and Celta Vigo played out a goalless draw.

In tomorrow’s matches, Atlético Madrid face Villarreal at 3am, Getafe take on Racing de Santander at 5.30am, and Barcelona travel to face Elche at 7.30am.
