The Fiji Kulas fell short in a 3-2 loss to Hong Kong in the first of two FIFA Women's International Friendlies in Hong Kong last night.

Hong Kong was leading 1-0 at half time.

The hosts strengthened their grip on the contest with two quick goals early in the second half to take a 3-0 lead and put the Kulas under significant pressure.

However, Fiji responded strongly, with Narieta Leba scoring the team's first goal before Elesi Tabunase added a second to reduce the deficit and set up an exciting finish.

Despite the late surge, the Kulas were unable to find an equaliser.

Head coach Nicola Demaine says the match provided the challenging test the team had been seeking against opposition from outside the Oceania region.

She notes that the side had started cautiously as they adjusted to the unfamiliar opposition but grew in confidence as the game progressed, highlighting the importance of exposure to higher-level international competition.

Demaine acknowledges the disappointment of conceding three goals but says the team's ability to fight back from a three-goal deficit reflected its determination and resilience.

The coach also welcomes the opportunity to give all 18 available players game time under FIFA's updated substitution regulations, with Ulamila Rasovasova making her senior international debut.

Demaine believes the lessons learned from the defeat would help the Kulas deliver a more consistent performance in the second and final friendly.

Fiji will meet Hong Kong again tomorrow in the final match of the FIFA international series.
