The Newcastle Knights have pulled off a stunning 12-10 victory over the New Zealand Warriors at Eden Park, ending the Warriors’ NRL finals campaign in a tense Sunday afternoon thriller.
In front of a record rugby league crowd of 48,511, the Knights held their nerve in the closing stages to book their place in the preliminary final against the Penrith Panthers at 6pm this Sunday.
The Warriors opened the scoring through Leka Halasima, who returned from injury to make an immediate impact.
Newcastle hit back through Fletcher Sharpe, with the sides locked at 6-6 at half-time.
The Knights struck early in the second half when winger Dom Young crossed to put Newcastle ahead 12-6.
The Warriors refused to surrender, with Halasima scoring his second try to bring the home side within two points.
However, the Warriors could not find the try they needed in the closing stages as Newcastle’s defence stood firm.
Kalyn Ponga was forced from the field for a head injury assessment late in the match following a heavy collision, but early reports indicated that he passed the assessment.
For Newcastle, it is another major step in a remarkable finals campaign as the Knights continue their run after finishing last season with the wooden spoon.
The Warriors, meanwhile, will be left to reflect on a heartbreaking end to their campaign in front of their home supporters.
