A delegation from the Kadavu Provincial Council, led by Roko Tui Kadavu Joji Banuve, visited the Naboro Corrections Complex on Tuesday to strengthen support for inmates preparing to return to their communities.
The delegation included 15 high chiefs from Kadavu, who travelled to the facility following last week's Kadavu Day Solevu in Suva.
The chiefs held talanoa and question-and-answer sessions with inmates from Kadavu, discussed challenges they may face upon release, and explored ways the Vanua could assist with their reintegration.
The Council also assessed the support and resources needed to help former inmates rebuild their lives and establish sustainable livelihoods when they return to the island.
Roko Tui says the Council and the Vanua have a cultural and moral responsibility to support those seeking a second chance.
He says the visit provided an opportunity to better understand the needs of inmates and reassure them that they would not be left to face reintegration alone.
The Fiji Corrections Service welcomed the initiative, describing it as an example of the important role communities play in successful rehabilitation.
Supervisor Southern Division Alevio Turaga says reintegration cannot be achieved by the Corrections Service alone and requires the support and leadership of the Vanua to help former inmates successfully return to society.
FSC says community acceptance is essential in reducing reoffending and building safer, more secure communities.
