The 2026-2027 National Budget is an irresponsible budget from an oversized Cabinet in an overspending Government.

This has been stated by Opposition Member of Parliament Rinesh Sharma this morning in parliament during the Budget debate.

Sharma criticised the Coalition Government’s fiscal strategy, questioning its decision to describe the Budget as a responsible budget while highlighting the projected deficit, rising debt and increased government expenditure.

Sharma says the Budget is weak fiscal management, pointing to the Government’s projected revenue of $3.8 billion and expenditure of $4.8 billion, resulting in a $1 billion deficit.

He says when debt repayments of $436 million are included, the gross deficit rises to $1.4 billion.

He questioned how the Government can claim fiscal responsibility while continuing to borrow, saying borrowing should focus on capital projects that generate returns rather than supporting operational costs.

He further says the Government must focus on creating opportunities for young Fijians through better education pathways, affordable housing and stronger support for businesses.

Sharma proposed a Government-supported affordable housing model aimed at helping young families and first-time home buyers access housing while the State retains ownership of land.

He also called for greater youth involvement in national decision-making, saying young people should have a meaningful role in shaping Fiji’s future.
