Australia produced one of the upsets of the opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Turkey 2-0 in their Group D clash in Vancouver this afternoon.

The Socceroos took the lead in the 27th minute when rising star Nestory Irankunda burst through on a counterattack, beat his defender and calmly slotted home.

Connor Metcalfe sealed the victory in the 75th minute with a superb long range strike.

Despite Turkey dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Australia's disciplined defence and goalkeeper Patrick Beach stood firm to secure all three points.

The result leaves Australia second in Group D after the United States opened their campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over Paraguay.

In other results today, Scotland beat Haiti 1-0, while Brazil and Morocco played out a 1-1 draw while Qatar and Switzerland also finished 1-1.

In tomorrow's matches, Germany will face Curacao at 5am, the Netherlands will take on Japan at 8am, Côte d'Ivoire will meet Ecuador at 11am while Sweden will play Tunisia at 2pm.
