High carbohydrates, low protein intake found among older Fijians - Hawea

Research conducted among older Fijians in the Central Division has found that protein intake remains a major nutritional concern, with many older adults consuming relatively high amounts of carbohydrates and fats but not enough protein.

The research was conducted in collaboration with the University of New South Wales and FNU.

Speaking during an oral presentation at the Pacific Islands Health Research Symposium at Fiji National University in Nasinu, FNU Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics Salanieta Hawea says the findings highlight the need for older people to include more protein-rich foods in their daily diets to support healthy ageing.

She says adequate protein is particularly important as people age, as it helps maintain muscle mass, muscle strength, physical function and overall wellbeing.

Hawea says older adults need sufficient protein to maintain their physical capacity and strength as they grow older.

She says a diet lacking adequate protein can make it more difficult for older people to maintain muscle mass and physical function.

Hawea stresses that older people should be encouraged to consume more protein-rich foods rather than relying heavily on carbohydrate-based meals.

Hawea says the wider health challenges facing Fiji’s older population also highlight the importance of better nutrition.

She says the study found that some older people also had chronic diseases, including diabetes and other long-term health conditions.

Hawea says greater emphasis is needed on ensuring older people consume adequate protein and other essential nutrients to support healthier ageing.
