Heavy rain alert issued for the whole of Fiji

A heavy rain alert is now in force for the whole of Fiji.

The Nadi Weather Office says an active trough of low pressure with associated cloud, showers and rain is expected to affect the country for the next few days.

The Weather Office says occasional rain with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls are expected over the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, interior and western Viti Levu from Rakiraki through Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, Nadi and Sigatoka to Navua, the interior of Ba, Ra, Nadroga/Navosa, Serua, Namosi, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

The Weather Office says cloudy periods with some showers and afternoon or evening thunderstorms are expected elsewhere.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Possible impacts include flash flooding of flood-prone and low-lying informal settlements and communities, businesses and Irish crossings leading to traffic disruptions, surface flooding on streets in urban areas with poor drainage, and wet roads with reduced visibility, especially during heavy downpours, increasing the risk of road accidents.
