A heavy rain alert is now in force for the Western Division and Kadavu as a trough of low pressure with cloud and rain remains slow moving over Fiji.
The Nadi Weather Office says that Tropical Disturbance 09F was located close to Vanuatu at midday today and is expected to gradually intensify and track to the southwest of Fiji in the few days.
They say it is highly likely to develop into a cyclone in the next 24 to 48 hours, however, it will not have a direct impact on the country.
As the system tracks to the southwest it is expected bring strong northwesterly winds and heavy rain over the Western Division especially from later Saturday.
The Weather Office says heavy rain and strong winds of average 40 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to kilometres per hour will impact the Western Division.
They say wind to ease by Monday but rain is expected to continue into the week.
Localised heavy rain may lead to flash flooding in low lying and flood prone areas.
