Germany delivered a ruthless statement in their FIFA World Cup opener, thrashing debutants Curacao 7-1 in their Group E clash in Houston.

The four-time world champions opened the scoring through Felix Nmecha in the 6th minute, but Curacao briefly shocked the crowd when Livano Comenencia equalised in the 21st minute to score the nation's first-ever FIFA World Cup goal.

Germany quickly regained control, with Nico Schlotterbeck restoring the lead in the 38th minute before Kai Havertz converted a penalty in first-half injury time to make it 3-1 at halftime.

Jamal Musiala extended Germany's advantage early in the second half before Nathaniel Brown added a fifth goal with a superb volley.

Deniz Undav then scored abother goal before Havertz grabbed his second goal of the match to complete the 7-1 rout.

Despite the heavy defeat, Curacao made history as the smallest nation by size and population ever to compete at a FIFA World Cup and celebrated a memorable moment through Comenencia's goal.

Germany's dominant victory gives them the perfect start to their Group E campaign.

In other matches, Japan will take on the Netherlands at 8am, Ecuador will face Ivory Coast at 11am, while Sweden will take on Tunisia at 2pm.
