Fiji Police plan Levuka Station repairs, push for new quarters

Drug and liquor offences on the rise in Ovalau - Police

Fiji Police plan Levuka Station repairs, push for new quarters
To strengthen law and order in Levuka, Ovalau, the Fiji Police Force plans to repair the Levuka Police Station in the next financial year.

However, Assistant Commissioner of Police Meli Sateki says the two police quarters will not be repaired as funding has not been allocated, despite a request for government assistance.

While responding to a question from Levuka resident Uraia Sorovakatini if the Police Force will be fixing the two quarters behind the Police Station during the Fijian Media Association's Levuka Town Hall session, ACP Sateki said police officers are currently renting accommodation in Ovalau.

He says the two police quarters have been declared unsafe and will need to be demolished before new and safer accommodation can be built.
ACP Sateki says the Police Force will continue to advocate for funding so more officers can be stationed in Ovalau.

On the crime trend in Ovalau, ACP Sateki says the highest number of reported crimes over the past five years was recorded in 2022, with 346 cases, while the lowest was recorded in 2023. However, he says the overall trend is once again increasing.

He says police have also recorded a decline in cases involving women and children, but an increase in drug-related and liquor-related offences.

ACP Sateki adds that police continue to provide clearance certificate services at the Levuka Police Station.
