Vulnerable children and senior citizens in Fiji are set to receive greater support following a fundraising Kirtan event organised by the Fiji Community California, which brought together members of the diaspora community in a show of solidarity and giving back to their homeland.
The event, which featured South African artist Preven Moodley, raised funds to assist some of the country’s most at-risk groups, including children in need of care and elderly persons facing hardship.
Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran officiated at the event and thanked the organisers, supporters and overseas-based Fijians for their efforts in supporting social welfare initiatives in Fiji.
She says the gathering reflected the strong spirit of generosity within the Fiji diaspora and their commitment to supporting vulnerable members of society.
Kiran highlighted the increasing need for social protection services in Fiji, particularly for elderly citizens who face issues such as neglect, financial hardship, isolation and reduced family support.
She also expressed concern about the growing number of children requiring care and protection due to family breakdown, drug abuse, addiction and other social challenges.
The Minister says Government is continuing to strengthen its support systems through residential care facilities, community-based services, family support programmes and child protection initiatives.
She adds that work is ongoing to improve care facilities and ensure families receive adequate support so children and elderly persons can live in safe and stable environments.
Kiran says funds raised from the event will go towards improving care, wellbeing services and essential support for vulnerable groups.
She also encourages continued public participation in charitable initiatives aimed at strengthening social protection across the country.
