Trial date for Prof. Prasad's FICAC case to be set next Thursday

The trial for the matter where MP and former Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad is charged by FICAC is expected to be set next Thursday.

Professor Prasad appeared before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad this morning.

Magistrate Yogesh Prasad has indicated that the trial could be held in July.

Meanwhile, FICAC lawyer Joseph Work says all documents relating to the Pre-Trial Conference was provided to Professor Prasad’s counsel last night.

Professor Prasad’s counsel Ashish Nand has sought 7 days to go through the documents.

Work has also informed the court that the complainant details in relation to charges has been provided to Professor Prasad.

He says FICAC had sent the complaint email and attachments to Professor Prasad.

Work also asked Nand if, just as for the stay application hearing in the High Court, Professor Prasad would be engaging a King’s Counsel.

Nand and Magistrate Prasad agreed that it does not matter now.

Nand says he and Richard Naidu are Professor a Prasad’s counsel.

Professor Prasad has been charged by FICAC with two offences relating to alleged non-disclosure in his 2015 statutory declaration as an office holder of the National Federation Party.

FICAC alleges that on or about 30th December 2015, Professor Prasad failed to declare his directorship in Platinum Hotels & Resorts PTE Limited in his declaration of assets, liabilities and income submitted to the Registrar of Political Parties, allegedly breaching the Political Parties Act.

He is also charged with providing false information in a statutory declaration, with FICAC claiming that the omission of the directorship made the declaration materially false.

The matter has been adjourned to next Thursday.
