38-year-old Savenaca Damuni, the father of a six-year-old boy who fatally injured his son while reversing a forklift, will be sentenced on the 30th of this month.
Damuni admitted hitting his son with the forklift, causing injuries that later led to the child's death.
Suva High Court Judge, Justice Dane Tuiqereqere told the defence lawyer to explain to Damuni that he should not be under the illusion that he would receive a suspended sentence.
This comes as State counsel mentioned that previous related cases were all given suspended sentencing.
Justice Tuiqereqere says there must be a deterrence for other like-minded parents whose gross negligence results in the death of their children.
Damuni sought the court's forgiveness and said he has the responsibility of caring for his other children.
He was convicted of one count of manslaughter arising from a breach of duty.
The incident occurred on the 2nd of May 2023.
