Fans attending matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will no longer be allowed to bring reusable water bottles into stadiums, with FIFA saying the move is aimed at preventing risks and injuries to players and spectators.

FIFA has updated its stadium entry regulations, removing a previous provision that allowed fans to carry transparent reusable bottles of up to one litre.

The decision comes amid concerns about summer heat in several host cities, including Toronto, where temperatures are expected to be high during match days.

The move has drawn criticism from fans and local officials, who say the policy raises health, cost and environmental concerns.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has described the restriction as a "pure money grab", while Toronto City Councillor Josh Matlow says fans should have adequate access to drinking water during matches.

FIFA says it is working with host city committees and local authorities to provide heat mitigation measures, including misting stations, cooling tents and water refill points outside stadium entrances.

Inside venues, water, soft drinks and juices will still be available for purchase, with all beverages supplied by FIFA partner Coca-Cola.

Environmental groups have also criticised the policy, warning it could increase the use of single-use plastic bottles.

Despite the criticism, FIFA maintains the ban is part of broader stadium security and safety measures.

Meanwhile, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off next Friday and run until 20th July.
