Emergency water supplies have been deployed to Vatulele Island to support 981 people across 222 families in Ekubu, Taunovo, Lomanikaya and Boulawaqa villages affected by ongoing water shortages linked to El Nino.
The Government deployed the MLC Vunilagi from Narayan Jetty on Wednesday, carrying the emergency water supplies to the island.
The supplies will also support the Vatulele Health Centre and Vatulele District School.
The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, together with the Commissioner Western Divisional Office, is coordinating the emergency response.
The National Disaster Risk Management Office is also supporting the coordination through the National and Divisional Emergency Operation Centres.
The Government says it is working with the Ministry of Public Works, Fiji Meteorological Services and the Water Authority of Fiji to ensure timely delivery of water and other essential assistance to communities affected by water shortages.
They say they remain committed to ensuring remote rural and maritime communities have access to safe and adequate water supplies during the prolonged dry conditions caused by the current El Niño event.
