Australian authorities have uncovered a huge stash of illicit drugs shipped from Latin America, with many packets labelled as 'Fiji'.
Following three days of searching industrial machinery piece by piece by Australian authorities early this year, halted the smuggling of 373kg of cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA and other drugs into Australia through Port Botany in Sydney.
Events began when Australian Border Force officers identified internal anomalies during a routine inspection of a heavy-duty diesel generator sent from Mexico, via Malaysia.
Australian Federal Police experts then spent three days dismantling the machinery before uncovering a haul of concealed drugs, including 106 blocks of cocaine, 50kg of methamphetamine in white plastic bags and 3kg of of MDMA, or ecstasy.
They seized the drugs and the AFP is now investigating the suspected criminal syndicate behind the bust.
Detective Acting Superintendent Stuart Kimbell says the force was seeking help from people who may have been approached to help store the generators.
Officers would also like to hear from people with mechanical or technical skills who may have been asked about repairing generators or the sale of spare parts.
Kimbell says the mixed bag of illicit drugs was likely destined for several different criminal groups, to be sold into a range of communities.
He says despite the elaborate attempt to conceal such a large quantity of drugs, the coordinated efforts of law enforcement ensured these substances never reached Australian streets.
Questions have been sent to the Fiji Police Force. They are yet to respond.
