COMPOL says evidence inconclusive in alleged assault linked to Radravu's Death

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu says the Police Force cannot be pressured into charging officers with murder during the allegation of assault case that led to the death of Sakiasi Ose Radravu when the available evidence and documentation do not conclusively support the allegations.

Speaking to the media after the Police Passing Out Parade of Batch 69 in Nasova, Tudravu said investigations must follow the legal process and be guided by evidence.

He says no report was lodged with police at the time the alleged assault reportedly occurred, with the matter only being reported after Radravu's death.

Tudravu says had the incident been reported earlier, police could have immediately commenced investigations, arranged for medical examinations and gathered evidence to support the claims.

He noted that investigators are facing challenges due to the absence of a medical report from the time of the alleged assault and the timing of the post-mortem examination, which was conducted approximately three months later.

According to the Commissioner, the available evidence is not consistent enough to conclusively establish the alleged assault or the involvement of police officers.

While photographs have since been submitted, Tudravu says it will be up to the Resident Magistrate to determine whether they can be accepted as evidence.

He says the lawful process requires police to complete investigation files, collect statements, conduct interviews and submit the docket to the Resident Magistrate for independent consideration.

He acknowledged public concern over the case and calls for stronger action, but stressed that established legal procedures must be followed.

He reiterated that police will act on whatever direction is provided through the legal process.
