Commander says RFMF remains committed to accountability

Commander says RFMF remains committed to accountability

The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major General Jone Kalouniwai has issued a statement to correct aspects of its initial communication concerning the death of drug convict, Jone Vakarisi, saying the RFMF acknowledges that the earlier description of the incident as a "medical emergency" does not fully reflect the medical findings now available.

This follows the receipt of the post mortem report of Vakarisi.

The Commander says the RFMF recognises the seriousness of these findings.

He says given that the matter is now under active investigation by the Fiji Police Force, it would be inappropriate to make further comment on specific details at this stage.

Major General Kalouniwai says the RFMF reaffirms its full and unreserved cooperation with the Police to ensure that all facts are established in a thorough, independent, and transparent manner.

The RFMF says it remains committed to accountability.

Major General Kalouniwai says where wrongdoing is established, it will be addressed in accordance with the law.

The RFMF extends its condolences to the family of the late Vakarisi during this difficult time.

The Commander says further updates will be provided as appropriate, following the conclusion of the investigative process.

Meanwhile Police say the investigation into the death of drug convict, Jone Vakarisi has been classified as murder.

Police investigators are in the process of gathering information to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding Vakarisi's death.

Police say the heads of the two institutions are reaffirming their commitment towards the conduct of a thorough investigation, and are appealing once again to members of the public to allow the investigative process to run its course.

The death certificate being circulated says Vakarisi died from severe head and chest injuries.

The report says the condition directly leading to his death is asphyxia.
