Many children with disabilities in Fiji continue to face daily challenges accessing healthcare, education and essential support services, with many families struggling to cope because of the high cost of living, limited transport and a lack of specialised care.
The Baseline Study of the Rights of Children with Disabilities in Fiji Summary Report highlights that support services remain uneven across the country, particularly for families living in rural and maritime areas, where access to healthcare, therapy and other specialised services is often limited.
The study found that many children also face barriers in their everyday lives because public buildings, schools and transport are not fully accessible.
It says some Government offices remain upstairs without ramps or lifts, while some schools and communities still lack accessible toilets. The report also found that some taxi drivers have refused to transport children using wheelchairs or were unable to accommodate them.
Families also told researchers that the monthly disability allowance is not enough to meet their needs, with many using the money to cover basic household expenses instead of disability-related equipment and support.
The report highlights delays in accessing assistance because of lengthy application processes, the lack of formal diagnoses and limited awareness of the services available.
It also says wheelchairs and other assistive devices remain in short supply and are often too expensive, forcing many families to rely on donations because there is no dedicated Government budget for these items.
The study is calling for greater investment in disability services, improved accessibility, better transport and stronger support for families to ensure children with disabilities have equal opportunities to learn, access essential services and fully participate in their communities.
