Youths in Macuata are set to benefit from improved maritime skills and safer livelihood opportunities following the completion of the Boat Master and Class 6 License Training programme at Nakawaga Village on Mali Island yesterday.

The programme, which aims to promote safe and sustainable maritime practices, was officially closed by Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Mosese Bulitavu.

Speaking at the ceremony, Bulitavu acknowledged the local leadership, government officials, and youth participants who contributed to the success of the programme.

He said it was a proud moment to witness the transformation in Nakawaga Village, noting that the programme goes beyond certification by recognizing the skills of participants and helping launch career opportunities for young people.

Funded and facilitated by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in partnership with the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), the training equips participants with the knowledge and certification to operate boats safely and professionally.

Bulitavu stressed the importance of safety, compliance and legal responsibility, saying that those with a Class 6 licence are now responsible for the lives of everyone on board.

He says the training goes beyond technical skills, helping to build environmental awareness, encourage social responsibility, and create economic opportunities.

He also urged participants to protect marine ecosystems, avoid pollution, and safeguard coral reefs as they pursue livelihoods in areas such as commercial boating, tourism, and fishing.
