Tikiko Balenawai of Namaka Public School claimed gold in the 50 metres backstroke during the National Schools Age Group Championship 2026 at the Damodar Aquatic Centre.
The young swimmer says the journey was not easy, as he only had three weeks to prepare for the competition.
Balenawai says the training sessions were tiring, but his coach, Simba guided him.
He further says he expected to win gold and was determined to give his best.
The Namaka Public student also acknowledged the sacrifices made by his father who is in Australia and thanked his mother for her continuous support.
Balenawai adds that swimming is a good sport because athletes get to enjoy themselves while competing and making new friends.
A total of 54 schools are competing in this year’s championship.
Marist Brothers High School are the defending champions in the boys’ division, while Drasa Avenue School hold the girls’ title.
The competition ends tomorrow.
