Bail granted to father and 2 others in relation to 6-yr-old boy’s death

38-year-old Savenaca Damuni, the father of the deceased 6-year-old boy, along with Raviravi Timberyard Directors Vinay Prakash Chandra and Sushila Devi, have been granted bail.

Damuni is charged with one count of manslaughter arising from a breach of duty.

It is alleged that while reversing a forklift, he struck his son, causing injuries that led to the his death.

Couple, Chandra and Devi are charged with one count of corporate manslaughter.

They are alleged to have permitted Damuni to operate the forklift despite knowing he did not hold the required licence.

Defence lawyer Mohammed Sameen told Magistrate Sufia Hamza that both directors were out of the country when the incident took place on 2nd May 2023.

Bail conditions for Damuni include changing his residential address by 6pm today, reporting to Lami Police Station between 8am and 5pm, not to reoffend, and changing his employment.

Bail conditions for Chandra and Devi include reporting to Nasinu Police Station, not managing business operations, surrendering their passports and a stop departure order being issued against them.

The matter has been transferred to the High Court and will be called on the 8th of May.
