Defending champions Argentina have survived a major scare to beat World Cup debutants Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time and reach the Round of 16.

A 111th-minute own goal by Diney Borges proved decisive after Cape Verde twice came from behind to level the scores against the three-time world champions.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute, taking his all-time FIFA World Cup tally to 20 goals.

However, Cape Verde, ranked 64th in the world, refused to give up and Deroy Duarte equalised in the second half to make it 1-all.

The match went into extra time, where Lisandro Martínez restored Argentina’s lead in the 92nd minute.

Cape Verde responded again 11 minutes later through Sidny Lopes Cabral, who scored a stunning curling goal to make it 2-all.

Cabral almost put Cape Verde ahead late in extra time, but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced a crucial save.

Argentina eventually secured the win in the 111th minute when Diney Borges scored an own goal.

Argentina will now face Egypt in the Round of 16 after the Pharaohs beat Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-all draw after extra time.

Meanwhile, Colombia will meet Ghana at 1.30pm.
