The Flying Fijians 27-7 loss to Samoa in the Rugby World Cup yesterday has been described by many rugby fans as one of our worst ever performance.
Fiji was not in the game from the opening whistle as this was supposed to be the occasion where the world got to marvel at the qualities of Pacific Island rugby but instead the 60,327 spectators at Eden Park were treated to the worst game of this World Cup so far.
Fiji’s game was blighted by errors and they were never in the contest.
In a talkback show on our sister station Viti FM last night, listeners highlighted they saw no game plan as the coaching staff were relying only on Sisa Koyamaibole and Leone Nakarawa as the ball carriers.
Also the kicking policy where no-one was chasing after the ball and the one-to-one defence was exposed by the Samoans every time they had the opportunity.
The 2007 RWC coach Ilivasi Tabua said from the opening whistle the body language of the Fiji team did not show they wanted to beat Samoa.
Coach, Samu Domoni Junior said player’s emotion two weeks in a row carried them away from their game plan.
Meanwhile the quarter final spot will be confirmed this weekend when all the pool games will come to an end on Sunday.
Just looking at the teams that are likely to qualify from their groups: in Pool A, New Zealand will be the winner while France is likely to be the runner-up.
In Pool B, England and Argentina are likely to come through while with Scotland’s only hope is to beat England on Saturday, Ireland have to beat Italy to be the winner in Pool C with the Wallabies coming in at second place while defending champions, South Africa look good for Pool D while the runner up is between, Wales and Samoa.
Wales is playing Namibia today at 6.30pm and Fiji on Sunday while Samoa will take on the Springboks on Friday.
In last night’s results, Argentina clinched a dramatic 13-12 win over Scotland.
Captain Felipe Contepomi returned from injury to kick the conversion of Lucas Gonzalez’s 73rd minute try and give Argentina a 13-12 win over Scotland, keeping alive the Pumas quarterfinal chances at the Rugby World Cup.
Ireland maintained their unbeaten run with a 62-12 win against Russia.
