Women continue to die from complications

Thirty out of every 100 thousand women in the country die each year from pregnancy and childbirth complications.

That is the stark revelation from the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood - who say that sadly most of these deaths are preventable.

Program officer Maggie Kama said a large number of deaths are mainly due to the lack of knowledge and awareness on the importance of early booking and that most mums are unaware of most of the danger signs of pregnancy.

Kama added most women also fear visiting the hospital and are unaware of the types of services provided while some are ignorant of the seriousness of their medical condition.

She said midwives from across the country are discussing issues surrounding their work in maternal health and working on formulating a constitution.
