Wheelchair-bound man who raped granddaughters sentenced to 16-years imprisonment

An 83-year-old wheelchair-bound man who raped his two granddaughters and a neighbour in Gau has been sentenced to 16-years imprisonment by High Court Judge, Justice Daniel Goundar.

The man had pleaded guilty to 3 counts of rape and not guilty of one count of rape.

It was heard in court that the two granddaughters were 6 and 7 years old at the time of the incident and the neighbour was 6 years old.

In his sentence, Justice Goundar says the man was supposed to protect the girls but he used them to fulfill the desire of his lust.

The judge says he cannot consider the man’s advanced age and medical condition as a mitigating factor as it did not deter him from committing the crime.

He adds the second and third victims were made to watch each other when the man committed the offence.

Justice Goundar says the man has taken responsibility for his crimes by pleading guilty and he is remorseful.

A non-parole period of 12-years has been set.
