Wellington train drivers have stopped work for 24 hours affecting some 30,000 commuters.
The 24‑hour train strike started at 2am and follows a breakdown in talks between the train drivers' union and rail operator Transdev.
There are no trains in the capital all day while the union strikes after talks with the rail operator.
Transdev says the union is fundamentally resistant to any change.
But the General Secretary of the Rail and Transport Union Wayne Butson says that the foreign‑owned employer is trying to lower wages, and will not listen to its concerns.
