Minister for Industrial Relations Jone Usamate says they are supervising safe removal of asbestos containing material from the Old Nausori Market and also from the President’s House in Suva.
This was highlighted during the first-ever Asbestos Symposium at the Pearl Resort today.
Usamate stated that asbestos is a risk for human health if not dealt with appropriately.
He adds that despite the Ministry issuing an assurance that the 30 percent asbestos containment was only on the materials from the Suva Civic Centre and that it was not airborne, the local media outlets and the social media sites went berserk as all types of rumors were spread.
He adds that there was considerable unnecessary panic and productivity loss because of that.
