NSW Waratahs coach Rob Penney has been abruptly sacked after his team's winless start to the Super Rugby AU season.

New Zealander Penney was told of the decision yesterday with his assistants Jason Gilmore and Chris Whitaker named as interim head coaches for the remainder of the 2021 season.

Saturday night's 46-12 defeat by the Queensland Reds proved the final straw.

In Round 7 of Super Rugby Australia, the Waratahs face the Brumbies at 8.45pm Friday while the Reds clash with the Rebels at 8.45pm Saturday.

In the Super Rugby Aotearoa, the Crusaders take on the Highlanders at 6.05pm Friday while the Blues play the Hurricanes at 6.05pm Saturday.
