Wages Council to decide on minimum wage rate for different sectors
The Wages Councils for 10 sectors will put forward their determination on the minimum wage rate to the Labour Minister by next month.

Permanent Secretary for Labour Taito Waqa said the Consumer Price Index, the inflation rate and other relevant social indicators will be taken into account.

However, Waqa said we need to go towards a productivity based wage rate as we need productive people.

Government last year announced a 10 percent increase for nine industrial private sectors, including hotel and catering, garment, saw milling and logging industries, mining, printing, wholesale, retail and the security service sectors.
