WAF signs MOU with Ministry of Agriculture on effectively utilizing sewage sludge as a biosolid for agricultural use

The Water Authority of Fiji has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Agriculture to collaborate on effectively utilizing sewage sludge as a biosolid for agricultural use.

The Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, Ritesh Dass says they will develop sewage sludge to be used as bio solids in the country while WAF will provide the sludge samples for testing.

WAF Chief Executive officer, Barry Omundson says this MOU will allow collaboration in making sewage waste safe to use and also boost the agricultural sector.

Omundson says currently all sludge is being treated as waste and the country spends millions of dollars to de-water the sludge only for it not to be used.

He says at the moment storage is an issue and taking the sludge to a landfill is costly.
