The government stressed that the proposed village by-laws which is currently at the consultation stage is to bring in a manageable social order in the villages in the country.
Government spokesperson, Lt Colonel Neumi Leweni said people are being misled by certain media outlets about corporal punishment and public flogging and he stresses that this is not part of the proposed village by-laws.
Lt Colonel Leweni said the issues that need to be addressed are clearly defined in the proposed by-laws.
He also said there is no corporal punishment or monetary fines if a villager commits these social offences.
Lt Colonel Leweni said the dress code for females is also very clear when they are in a village.
He said the proposed village by-laws were given to the Roko Tuis in a meeting in Nadave in March for them to have further consultations in the villages.
Consultations continue and further discussions and proposals will be looked at in a workshop on June 25th.
