Vasiti Soko wins Women’s International Network on Disaster Risk Reduction Excellence Award

The Director of the National Disaster Management Office, Vasiti Soko has won the inaugural Women’s International Network on Disaster Risk Reduction Excellence Award. In her acceptance speech, Soko says she accepted the award on behalf of all the women in Fiji, in government, civil societies, faith-based organisations and in all villages and communities.

Soko says she is humbled that their collaboration, all the hours and days they put into disaster management, saving lives and addressing women needs in Fiji has been recognised by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Director adds mainstreaming disaster risk reduction is everyone’s responsibility and the time to take action is now.

She has also acknowledged all nominees and the nine women who were shortlisted with her.

Soko says they are all leaders and she accepts this award on their behalf and has thanked them for their contributions in reducing disaster risks in their respective countries and in the Asia-Pacific region.
