The University of Fiji, Saweni Campus, now has its own water supply after their borehole, tank and tap system was officially commissioned by the Pro-Chancellor and Chair of the University Council, Ambassador Kamlesh Arya.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Shaista Shameem, says the University in 2022 had resolved to find its water supply because of the cost and an irregular supply.

Shameem says the University has been developing its own organic garden and landscaping project that requires a regular, low cost and chemical-free supply of water.

She says a 10,000-litre tank has been installed to store the water.

She says the borehole can supply the water needs of the University and also for Saweni and Vuda communities in case of a water shortage.

The University now demonstrates that its plan to become a holistic University with a small carbon footprint can be achieved.

The project is called the UniFiji Wai-Jal: Water for Life.

The words ‘wai’ and ‘jal’ mean water in iTaukei and Hindi languages.
