The Fiji Bank and Finance Sector Employees Union says some employers have been extremely tough on employees who are late to work in the morning due to traffic congestion in the Suva Nausori corridor.

National Secretary Sailesh Naidu says employees have been forced to go home for the day if they were late to work for less than an hour.

He says in one case an employee’s leave was deducted for being late.

Naidu says employers should be understanding and many stakeholders have also raised the issue of traffic congestion due to roadworks being carried out by the Fiji Roads Authority.

He adds that they received numerous complaints last week.

The Fiji Bank and Finance Sector Employees Union says as an alternative and interim measure employers should introduce flexible hours for workers affected to cover up for lost work time.

The Fiji Roads Authority has instructed all its sub‑contractors that no roadworks will be done from 6 am to 9.30am and from 4pm to 6pm.
