US hits record COVID cases and hospitalisations

Record-high COVID-19 infections and hospitalisations have been reported in the US, with fears they will not slow in the run-up to Christmas.

The number of people in hospital passed 100,000 for the first time, a figure that has doubled since early November.

BBC News reports new cases rose by a record 195,695 today.

COVID-19 cases in the US are now closing in on 14 million, with more than 264,000 deaths, according to data from the Covid Tracking Project.

There are now more than 57 million COVID-19 cases in the world with more than 1.3 million deaths according to data collated by Johns Hopkins University in the US.
