Two people have died following two separate accidents over the weekend.

Police say the first victim was a passenger of a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old man who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and was involved in an accident along Princes Road last night after 9pm.

They say the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle near the Waila Treatment Plant, causing it to veer off the road and hit a post.

Police say the victim was rushed to the Nausori Hospital by a passing vehicle, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, and the other two passengers sustained injuries, and are admitted at the CWM Hospital.

The driver, who fled the scene after the accident, was arrested shortly after at Navitoko Settlement in Sawani.

Another fatal accident occurred in the Northern Division, where a 56-year-old man died from injuries allegedly sustained after he was hit by a vehicle driven by a 37-year-old man on Saturday night.

Police say the suspect was driving along the Lekutu and Veiseaseavula Highway when he hit the victim, who was walking on the roadside.

The victim was taken to the Lekutu Health Centre and later transferred to the Labasa Hospital, where he was admitted until he passed away yesterday afternoon.

Police investigations into both cases continue.
