Tropical depression may change into a cyclone

People in the Western parts of Fiji should be prepared as a tropical depression is likely to develop into a tropical cyclone late today or tomorrow.

The tropical depression is expected to move southeast towards Fiji and intensify further.

With heavy rainfall expected a flash flood warning is also being issued to those in low lying areas.

A strong wind warning remains in force for Yasawa and the Mamanucas, Western Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

Although the main impact may be felt in the West, people in other areas are also being issued with warnings of strong winds and continuous heavy rain.

Associated active trough with cloud and rain bands affect the group.
 
Strong north to north-west winds is expected with average speeds of 45km/hr to 55km/hr with momentary gusts to 80km/hr over Yasawa and Mamanuca, Western Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

Rough to very rough seas.

Elsewhere, moderate to fresh northerly winds, gusty at times.

Periods of rain, heavy at times and squally thunderstorms.

Nadi Weather Office Director, Alipate Waqaicelua confirmed that people in the Fiji group are likely to feel the cyclonic conditions from later today and preparations for these conditions should be made now.
