Tropical depression likely to develop into tropical cyclone
A Tropical Disturbance which is located near Rotuma is now upgraded to a Tropical Depression and the system could develop into a Tropical Cyclone by the end of the week.

A heavy rain warning has also been issued by the Nadi Weather Office this afternoon.

This is now in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Eastern Viti Levu, Northern Lau and the Lomaiviti group.

Weather Office Director, Alipate Waqaicelua said the system will take an Easterly direction but move back into the group.

Waqaicelua said the heavy rain warning is in place for people to prepare themselves for flooding.

Waqaicelua said people should also listen to the weather forecasts as the system could intensify further.

He also calls on mariners to take all the necessary precautions.

Permanent Secretary for Information, Sharon Smith-Johns said that the current weather forecasts indicate the possibility of a tropical cyclone forming this weekend.

She said people need to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and be pro-active.
