A Tropical cyclone Warning is now in force for the Northern Division and the Northern Lau group while the rest of the Fiji group, a cyclone Alert is in force.
Nadi Weather Office Director, Rajendra Prasad said that the warning is in place for the Northern Division and Lau areas only and as a precautionary measure they have issued the warning which means that within the next 24 hours, people can expect damaging gales.
The warning is in place for those in Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and nearby areas as well as Northern Lau.
Prsad stressed that this warning means that people should start getting ready as the Tropical Cyclone may hit within the next 24 hours.
The Category 2 tropical Cyclone Tomas centre is currently located 405 kilometres North North East of Udu Point at 7am this morning.
Close to its centre, the cyclone is estimated to have average winds of 110 kilometres an hour to 155 kilometres within the next 24 hours.
Damaging gale force winds by early tomorrow morning with average speed of 85 kilometres and momentary gusts of 120 kilometres an hour.
The damaging gales and strong winds are expected to extend to about 280km from the center of Tropical Tomas.
For the Rest of Fiji, Easterly winds are expected to strengthen later today with winds reaching upto 85 kilometres later on in the day.
Winds expected to pick up with damaging heavy swells and flooding of low lying coastal areas.
