Three homes nearly buried as landslide hits Batiniwai Settlement in Caubati

Three families in Batiniwai Settlement, Caubati are counting themselves extremely fortunate this morning after a landslide came dangerously close to crashing into their home.

While speaking to fijivillage News, settlement representative Levani Raiyala says residents are now working together to restore their water supply, which was disrupted when a pipe was damaged by the landslide.

Raiyala says the landslide was triggered by continuous heavy rain from 9am, and the entire settlement, home to 50 households, is now experiencing a water cut.

The 50-year-old confirms the footpath to the main road was also destroyed, and residents are now using alternative routes for access.

Raiyala adds this is the second landslide the community has faced.

The first occurred along the riverbank, while today's landslide severely damaged the main footpath.
