The 1999 Copyright Act needs to be reviewed – FPRA
Fiji Performing Rights Association Chairman Eremasi Tamanisau

The Fiji Performing Rights Association Chairman Eremasi Tamanisau says the current 1999 Copyright Act needs to be reviewed as there have been a lot of cases of illegal use of internet for the uploading, downloading and sharing of composed local music.

Tamanisau says because there is no provision in the Copyright Act for the digital domain, this makes the Act weak in this regard.

He says they have asked government to work with the World Intellectual Property Organisation of the UN.

Tamanisau says the World Intellectual Property Organization has come up with two internet treaties and they are the World Intellectual Property Organization Copyright Treaty and Phonograms and Performances Treaty.

Tamanisau says the Act was amended in 2009 but it is now 11 years and is overdue for review.
