Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran

As preparations for the 145th Girmit Day celebrations get underway, the Taukei Vidilo and Tui Vuda have given their blessings for the celebration in Lautoka.

A traditional ceremony seeking the blessings from the Vanua was held and led by the Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran.

Kiran says on Girmit day we remember the struggles and plight of the ancestors but we also celebrate the descendants who have to help build the country.

She says it is also a day we celebrate our relationship with other ethnic groups because when the girmitiyas came to Fiji, they relied heavily on other ethnic groups as well.

The 145th Girmit celebrations will be a four day event which will be held from next Friday to Girmit Day public holiday on 13th May at the Girmit Centre in Lautoka.
