Suspended police officer granted bail after alleged drunk driving accident

Suspended Police Constable Edward Bibi, who allegedly drove a police vehicle while drunk and caused an accident has been granted bail by the Lautoka Magistrates Court.

Bibi allegedly drove a police vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and lost control, causing it to veer into the opposite lane, and collide with an oncoming vehicle yesterday morning at Lauwaki Village.

Bibi appeared before Lautoka Magistrate Timoci Qalinauci this afternoon.

He is charged with a count each of dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle with a concentration of alcohol present in his blood.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions John Rabuku appeared for the State and requested 14 days to file disclosures on the case.

The matter has been adjourned to April 1st.

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has directed the officer be interdicted (suspended) with half pay and await the outcome of his court proceeding.
