Majority of the supermarkets in Suva are still awaiting word from their suppliers in relation to the new prices to be set on food items that are no longer under price control.
Fijivillage visited some major supermarkets and butchers in Suva to see the new prices on items such as imported sheep meat, Masala tea ,locally produced coconut oil and ghee that are no longer under price control.
We noticed that most of the supermarkets are still selling the items at the same price and the items will only be sold at a new price according to the cost of buying from their suppliers.
However, a prominent supermarket has already increased its Lamb chops by an average by almost $4, lamb neck and lamb pieces increased by almost by $2 however their other items still remain at the same price.
Also, a prominent butcher we visited has limited their variety of lamb meat as they wouldn’t be able to cope with the new cost of buying all the lamb meat from their suppliers.
Five food items have been removed from the price control list effective from today.
