Students should not give money for extra activities
Education Minister, Doctor Mahendra Reddy.

The government stresses that schools cannot just ask for money from students for different activities.

Education Minister, Doctor Mahendra Reddy says the Ministry needs full details if any school management wants to have fundraising activities for projects.

He stresses that none of the students are to pay any levies to the schools for events such as World Teachers Day.

Education Minister, Doctor Mahendra Reddy has received letters from parents of a school where the management had asked each student to bring $10 for World Teachers Day.

Doctor Reddy says they have also received information from a school in Ba where parents were being told to give $50 each for the graduation ceremony of students.

He says they can give approvals if the Ministry sees that the funds raised will be used for meaningful projects, and the ex-students or parents are willing to take part in the project.

Fijivillage has received information that some schools ask students to contribute money for events like World Teachers Day for a special lunch and gifts for teachers.

Some parents say this puts extra burden on them and the students feel embarrassed if they do not take the contribution.

They feel that the teachers are already getting paid for their services and they do not need the special lunch and gifts.
