Strong possibility of a tropical cyclone

Strong possibility of a tropical cyclone
The Nadi Weather Office said there is a strong possibility that a tropical cyclone will form in the Fiji group later this week.

A heavy rain alert is now in force for the whole of the Fiji group while a strong wind warning is now in force for the land areas of Yasawa, the Mamanucas, Kadavu and the western half of Viti Levu.

A trough of low pressure lies to the north of Fiji.

A tropical depression is expected to develop to the west of Fiji and gradually move towards the group from tomorrow.

Associated active rain and cloud bands are expected to affect the country from tomorrow afternoon.

Nadi Weather Office Director, Alipate Waqaicelua said people should get ready for flash flooding and strong winds.

Waqaicelua said the heavy rain alert is for the whole of the Fiji group.

He said at this stage, the system will not move away from the group until Friday.

Waqaicelua said people should not be complacent and they need to act now.
