Stray dogs who are deemed unsuitable for re-homing will be euthanized - Ministry of Agriculture

Stray dogs that are deemed unsuitable for re‑homing options or other logistical reasons such as lack of shelter space upon capture will be euthanized.

That’s been confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture.

A government statement says the decision to kill the dogs not suitable for re-homing was made after a general agreement was reached in a meeting between stakeholders at the Ministry’s headquarters in Raiwaqa

It says the meeting was attended by representatives of Vet Essentials in Lami, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Animals Fiji, PASH Fiji and the Fiji Police Force.

More than 40 stray dogs were captured during the first week of the Ministry of Agriculture’s 8 week stray dog control campaign.

The current approach being taken by stakeholders during the campaign include door‑to‑door licensing enforcement and registration, trapping, re‑homing and adoption.
